After a brief history of the industry, there is an extensive sections on 60 traditional patterns followed by a chapter of projects using the techniques.

Ruskin Lace & Linen Work My aim when writing this book was that it would be a functional working manual. Following through my original aim, so that as many as possible could enjoy the making of Ruskin Lace. What is Ruskin Lace. A combination of Cut Linen Work, Drawn Thread and Needle Made Lace, worked on to an evenly woven fabric, with very distinctive results Over the past thirty six years () and having taught in excess of students I am still learning and enjoying the challenges that an empty pattern area presents.

John Ruskin is proclaimed to have brought patterns of needlemade lace from Italy where he saw examples on church linen, no evidence as to in what form these patterns came has been found, it is felt that if Marion Twelves had a physical piece of work to guide her, the work that was given the name ‘Greek Lace’ would not have been worked as she adapted the technique, to work.

The Ruskin Museum contains an extensive collection of hand-spun, hand-woven linen, including items embroidered from nature, and many fine examples of Ruskin Lace, a form of cut or reticella lace, and needle lace, inspired by the sumptuous ruffs and collars worn by sitters in portraits by Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.

Ruskin Lace is worked wherever possible on to an evenweave fabric, this is a fabric that has been woven with the same weight of yarn in both the warp and weft direction. This ensures that when the traditional four-sided stitch border to the pattern areas and the immediate inside of hem depth is worked, the block will be the same square shape in.
